The plot of the "The Long Haul" is simple: an unnamed 20-something woman tells about her relationship with a talented guitarist who slides into alcoholism. But it is not a simple story. It delves into the dynamics of addiction and codependency, and their effects on a person and a relationship. It is a story that is unsettling, illuminating, too-close-for-comfort and oddly appealing all at the same time.

Amanda Stern's writing may be simple and direct but it is pregnant with emotion and meaning. The unnamed narrator's circumstances are presented realistically and without any apologies. The story is what you might hear at a therapy session or a late-night tte--tte with your best girlfriend. More so, this is a story with which many people have personal experience. This is a must-read for anyone who has a hard time understanding the emotional dynamics of such a relationship. "The Long Haul" left me considering the fine line between addiction and codependency.

A native New Yorker, this is Amanda Stern's first novel. Amanda will be appearing at the Lodi Public Library on November 9th at 2pm. (This is all based on the supposition that she will be successful at obtaining her first driver's license ever! - apparently not knowing how to drive is a common situation for NYC residents.) She will be signing copies of, talking about and reading from The Long Haul.
